The extinction of animals may be triggered by a number of natural causes such as climatic changes or fluctuating sea levels. Scientists also believe that the asteroid that struck earth millions of years ago was one theory that led to the eradication of dinosaurs.
Nowadays, animal extinction have been led human activities. These include the destruction of habitat (as a result of agricultural conversion and urbanization), increase in human population, urban pollution, over hunting/poaching, or bringing in new animal species in an untapped environment.

These flightless species were mentioned by a group of Dutch sailors in 1598. Years later, its numbers significantly decreased with the introduction of new species into the island. Finally, their over hunting led to their extinction. The last dodo sighting was in 1662.
